Appearance may conceal a person's age, but not with saliva (saliva). Saliva could accurately guess the age of a person. To the extent that the term should not spit carelessly if you want to hide your age.
Scientists from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) American, managed to find a way to determine a person's age from saliva by chemical modification (methylation process) on one of the four building blocks of human DNA.
The breakthrough is expected to be applicable to use in the next 5 years. These findings will also help to uncover cases of crime such as determining the age of murder victims.
Examined saliva may be taken from anywhere that leave traces of saliva, including former saliva on cigarette butts. Findings have been reported in the online edition of Public Library of Science One journal.
"By simply using saliva samples, we can accurately predict the life of someone without knowing any information of that person," said Dr.. Eric Vilain, director of the center of community development and genetics from UCLA as reported by FoxNews, Sunday (26/06/2011).
In his research, scientists studied the methylation process of saliva in 34 twin pairs. Scientists studying the genome at which DNA methylation is associated with the age process. After identifying two or three genes with age-related methylation process, the researchers then match the results with the actual age of the participants.
Dr. Vilain says the findings are also significant potential to find out how the aging process occurs on the chronology of a person's actual age and how the environment also influence it.
"These findings pave the way for the discovery of drugs that are tailored to the characteristics of someone. Do drugs can slow the aging process is influenced by environmental changes or other dynamic changes, this is really exciting," said Dr Vilain.
Previously, scientists have also found several ways to detect disease using saliva. Saliva test is claimed to better represent the large number of hormones making it suitable to determine the condition of a person's hormones.
However if it is associated with hormones, saliva testing is a weakness because it requires several tests due to people experience fluctuating levels of hormones. For example, when approaching the menopause, women will experience a variety of symptoms due to a decrease in estrogen levels.
But the findings of saliva to determine the age someone is considered quite accurate because the genes examined is someone who is rarely affected by any circumstances.
